Vaulting is gymnastics and dance on a moving horse.

A lunger controls the horse while vaulters perform tricks of dance and gymnastics on its back. For the horse's comfort there is a thick pad between its bare back and the vaulters. Holding this pad in place is a specialized piece of tack called a vaulting surcingle which has two handles at its top.

Vaulting has many unique and wonderful features:

Children are able to be challenged at exactly their level because of the infinite variety of exercises available to them.

Children with no riding experience have the joy of riding on a horse, without the worry of controlling it.

Because the children are not controlling the horse, and are in a contained area with soft footing, it is one of the safer equestrian sports.

Children learning to ride find their balance greatly improved by vaulting. In fact, this is why the sport was created.

Children get to work individually and together, satisfying both the hunger for personal accomplishment, and the longing to be part of something bigger.

Vaulting offers recognition (medals) both for personal attainment of skill, and for competitive triumphs.

Practices begin with stretching, barrel work, and on to the horse. The barrels are two faux horses out of old barrels with handles on top and padding, available so vaulters can practice and invent moves while others are on the horse. Barrels serve two important functions: 1) extra practice time for the children; 2) reduced 'clunking' on the horse. Being 'light on the horse' is one important aspect of vaulting.

There are two types of exercises in vaulting, compulsories and kür. The compulsories consist of six exercises that everyone, from gold medalists to beginners, perform solo. Kür consist of anything vaulters can imagine doing, with a limit of 3 people on the horse. Classes consist of work in both types of exercises. Compulsories help children learn basic skills. Kür allow them explore their strengths and imagination.
